An Aortic valve replacement is a surgical procedure in which a patient's diseased aortic valve is replaced by a healthy valve. The alternative valve may be an artificial one or be taken from a cadaver (homograft), an animal such as a pig (xenograft) or even be replaced by the patient's pulmonary valve (Ross procedure), which is in turn replaced by an new valve. Each of these options have their own advantages and disadvantages and the decision will usually depend on the individual patient(such as compliance with medication, age, overall health and various other factors).
