Hemodialysis is an artificial means of replacing kidney function if an individual's own kidneys have failed. The process involves removing blood from the patient, filtering it of waste products such as urea and creatine, removing excess fluid and then returning the freshly filtered blood to the patient. In most cases hemodialysis is used until a kidney transplant can take place.
