A myocardial infarction (MI) or acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, is a medical condition in which the blood supply is cut off to an area of heart muscle, due to a blockage in one of the coronary arteries. If the blood supply is not re-established within a certain period of time, the area of the heart deprived of blood will die resulting in cardiac failure. Myocardial infarction is one of the common causes of cardiac arrest.
